Can I Use Soft Water in My Humidifier?

Yes. Soft water is humidifier-friendly and ready. In fact, soft water can dramatically decrease the number of mineral build-ups and maintain the humidifier working properly.

However, some of my avid readers messaged me about the high salt content in their soft water. This can be alarming so I thought, I needed to do my research and with this, I asked water treatment experts.

If previously, I got the chance to talk to an expert about using hard water, I will be conducting the same kind of investigation to make sure that we all get the right information.

How To Maintain Humidity Level at Home

Generally, soft water is fine with humidifiers. The only thing we all need to consider is the water softening system that is installed at home. Coming home to a fresh smelling and clean house is the nicest feeling you get especially from a long day at work. I get that confidence that at home, I have a healthy environment and I am sure that I am breathing clean air. As part of my job, I make sure that the humidity level at home is well-balanced and maintained to avoid health problems. So this is where humidifiers come into the picture. They help ensure that the air at home is balanced and even free from impurities. And to ensure that the humidifier can keep up with my daily routine and lifestyle, it needs to run smoothly and at its peak.

Hard Water vs. Soft Water

Water is tested and considered hard when it has a great number of minerals including, calcium, magnesium, iron and other minerals.

Here in the US, at least 75% of households use moderately hard water. This is according to the water classification of the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Is Soft Water Safe?

is soft water safe?

I personally dislike seeing my fixtures and other appliances mounted with nasty buildups because they might become breeding grounds for molds and bacteria.

And because we are mostly using moderately hard water, softening it can help get rid of these mineral deposits and lime scales. We can achieve soft water by means of boiling it or by going through water treatment.

Boiling releases the calcium carbonate, magnesium, and iron, and leaves the water soft. It also kills all the bacteria that is in the water. However, it is not convenient to boil the water all the time especially when using cool mist humidifiers.

There are water softening systems that can be installed in houses to treat hard water and give you a lot of benefits.
